Credit Card Help – How To Get Out Of Credit Card Debt?

by admin on August 9, 2009

Need credit card help? Are you one of the millions of Americans that are facing financial difficulties because you are struggling to make your minimum payments every month? Well you are not alone. I can remember just a few years back when I was a college student and my mailbox was flooded every day with credit card offers. “0% for 12 months” “0% for 18 months” These offers were too good to resist. I remember applying for several cards with easy acceptance.

Well the days of generosity form creditors is slowing down. One thing that remains the same is that stack of statements that you receive every month asking for a $50, $100, or $150 payment.  After paying a quarter of your paycheck to creditors you ask yourself how did I get into this mess and how do I get out?  If you continue on the path that you are on you will be forever in debt to the creditors.

Well first you have to instill some discipline. You have to convert from a spender to a saver. You will never get out of debt if you continue to create debt. After you have taken this first step, you have several options. You can buy books and audio cds and listen to the experts such as Dave Ramsey or John Commuta, but they are all going to tell you the same basic principal. The principal remains the same while each author presents different details.

Now here is the plan:

  1. Lay all of your statements out on the table
  2. Sort from highest APR to lowest APR
  3. Attack your highest APR card first by paying all that you can on that card per month.
  4. Pay the minimum payment on all other cards while you are paying down the highest card.
  5. After your first card is paid off move onto the next highest interest card and follow the same steps. This time you are going to be able to pay all of money that you paid into the last card towards this card.
  6. Continue this process until your credit card debt is eliminated

If this sounds too simple you are correct. The difficult part is training yourself to not be such a heavy consumer and focus on your debt. One you mastered this life will be much easier debt free.
