Each year, over 135 million Americans file their income taxes electronically or by filling out the traditional paper tax form. It is human nature that the individuals who are expecting to receive a tax refund will file their taxes in late January or early February while those who know that they will be paying wait until the last minute. If you are like most people, you would like to hold on to your money as long as possible. Because of this phenomenon, many filers wait until the last minute to file their federal income taxes.
With so many procrastinators, a common question asked my millions of Americans each year is when are taxes due this year. Well, the answer is the same as it was last year and the year before. The income tax due date for the 2009 tax year is Thursday, April 15, 2010. As of right now, we are about five weeks away from the tax deadline when people from all around rush to get their taxes in.
If you are having a difficult time getting your taxes prepared for the 2009 year, you may want to consider filing for an extension. Out of the 135 million tax payers, about 10 million request an extension each year. Out of the 10 million requests about 2 million of them are submitted electronically. Filing for an income tax extension may be a good decision if you are unable to come up with tax funds by April 15th or you are not able to prepare your taxes on time for whatever reason.
